county of Gloucestershire. Where data is from national sources we may be
able to provide national comparisons, but we are not able to do this for
data we collect locally.

The main geographical areas used
are:
Administrative: County,
District, Wards (2003 boundaries), Parishes, Electoral Divisions, Primary
Care Trusts.
Statistical: Below ward level
official statistics are increasingly being released at output area level.
These are designed to remain constant over time as administrative
boundaries change. Output areas come in various sizes. Starting from the
smallest these are:
Census Output Area: average
size 110 households (have reference numbers like 23UEFS0006). There are
1944 in Gloucestershire.
Lower Super Output Areas
(SOAs) :
average size 1500 people (average of 650 households in Gloucestershire). May be referred to as "Super Output Areas" and have a reference number such
E0102200 or a name such as All Saints (2). This indicates the ward it
sits within. There are 367 in Gloucestershire.
Above these are Middle Layer Super
Output Areas which are about twice the size of wards (average
population 7500). There are 75 in Gloucestershire.
Upper Layer Super Output Areas are not currently in use.
The size of these will be around 25,000 people.
